Maternity Benefit is a payment made for 26 weeks to employed and self-employed women who satisfy certain PRSI contribution conditions on their own insurance record. The original scheme was introduced in 1970 and was extended to include the self-employed from 9th June 1997. WebAs with paternity leave, employees are not guaranteed compensation during their leave, but they may qualify for the Maternity Benefit for the 26 weeks. The additional 16 weeks are not eligible for the Maternity Benefit. Employers may elect to provide some level of pay during maternity leave, which should be explained in the employment contract.
